What after obtaining a PPL?

Hello Dear aviator!

So here's a question or rather a discussion.

I am fairly new to the aviation world in Sweden and I am on an adventure to get a PPL. I did some research and it looks like flying in a club was the best option. This was done about a year ago

My goal after obtaining a PPL is to travel around Sweden to different cool aerodromes / airports for the "$ 100 burger" (from our amazing aviator friends in this forum a map https://www.flygfyren.nu/community/index.php ? threads / list-good-restaurants-n% C3% A4ra-flight% C3% A4lt.3027 / ) or weekend trips, however, within my small flying club, it's rather difficult to rent the plane for 1+ days

What are other alternatives, is it possible to rent directly from a plane owner? Is that popular are there any other alternatives? Just a discussion for a newbie
What about co-owning a plane? (I generally know these are very hard questions to ask since it really depends on the "buyer / interest" situation and what is the amount of money to spend. I'm just looking to open a discussion and learn more about the system If you can suggest any reads that might help that I might have missed please let me know!

Any other tips you might have or you see that this young (hopefully soon to be pilot) should be aware and learn please let me know!

Hi! I think the easiest way would be to find an aeroclub letting you book a plane for longer periods. Cross country flights to new destinations are great! At least here in southern Sweden there are a couple of alternatives all offering this possibility. May I ask in which part of the country you fly?

 

Find another pilot to fly with on longer trips. You can go twice the distance for the same money and you(both of you) will get a lot of experience.

There are also some aircraft that are very cheap to buy and operate. Most Jodel aircraft are examples of that category. Find something “experimental” and share it with another pilot. If you intend to fly a lot, more than 50 hrs a year, it will most likely be cheaper than renting.

 

Hey Erik! I'm already in a flying club where I'm practising my hours for the PPL (getting close to getting ready for the checkride) however it's pretty complicated when it comes to booking a plane for a longer period... I agree I can't wait to perform some cross country flights!

I'm located out of Stockholm and for now, I've only flown in the Stockholm/Ostgota area How about you Erik? Where do you fly and what is the best place you've flown to?

Hah! That's a great idea, I really should start working on my pilot networking What would be the best place to go looking into buying something and how can I find estimates for the cost of hangar etc?

I'm not sure if I would fly more than 50hrs a year but around 50 would at least be the goal.

 

Since the SEK is low you should start by looking here in Sweden. Check at pilotmagazinet.se, EAA website/magazine, Facebook and maybe Blocket.se? Another good idea might be to just ask around and eventually you will come across something that is for sale.

Rough estimates:

• Hangar: 1500-2000 SEK/month
• Annual maintenance: 10 000 SEK/year
• Transportstyrelsen fees: 4000-5000 SEK/year
• Insurance: 10 000-15 000 SEK/year

Also here you will be well of if you share it with someone, another owner will cut your own costs in half. Soon you might also be able to count hours flown in ultralights for your PPL which is great.

Hello Riste, I’m a member of Sjöbo flygklubb where they have one PA28 and one C172 about 1200kr/h flying time.

Got my license in late 2018, so I’m also fairly new. My longest trip so far was from ESMI to LKMB which was a lot of fun! I remember the ATC being surprised and said something like ”thats a long way for that aircraft, have a good day”.

Oh Interesting, I'll certainly take a better look at this, thanks for the points. Yeah as I mentioned earlier I really have to work on the pilot networking skills it's kind of funny, we usually can't stop talking about aviation so it really shouldn't be that hard for me to find more of us around

Ohhh awesome! I still haven't gotten my license (the theory is kicking me behind) working full time and studying and trying to fly and move places is quite a lot at the moment but I'm getting there! I have planned long navigation from ESSE -> ESSP -> ESOW -> ESSE tomorrow if the weather approves so that'd be my longest one for now

Wow, that's really awesome! I'd love to fly to other countries! Did you fly VFR? How was handling radios in other countries?

VFR all the way, was really lucky with the weather

Radio was no issue either, although I would recommend a good ANR headset for longer flights, makes it easier to hear transmissions with lower quality.
